1989 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe Bike 23" Frame Silver 12 Speed Bicycle Made in Chicago
About "Le Tour": This was a name Schwinn had been using for a line of road bikes -- or "ten-speeds" as they said back in the day -- for years. But many of the early rides, like the Varsity and Continental, were not exactly lightweights and known for heavy components, such as plain pipe seatposts, steel cottered cranks or one-piece cranks.
By 1985, however, the Le Tour was made with a lugged steel frame, downtube shifters [in particular, Suntour friction areo shifters mounting inside the main triangle to the top of the downtube rather than on the sides of it; this was an eighties thing...], aluminum cotterless cranks, alu peddles, handlebars, stem, and micro-adjust fluted seatpost, and at least one set of water bottle holes in the frame. The water bottle mount holes are reinforce dwith diamond shaped metal pieces, a nice touch I've seen on other Scwhinns of the era...
Basically, the 1985 Le Tour was laying claim to the territory of the "real" road bike, a space previously reserved for middle level Raleighs and entry level Motobecanes, Fujis, and Bianchis, and sundry other "foreign" rides not having U.S. liniage.
I call this model the 1984-85 because though it's a 1985 model by all accounts, the brake cable housings are marked 1984, leading me to believe Schwinn was using last years parts on this years bike. Certainly such things are not unknown, but make it doubly confusing for us who collect, tinker with, or ride old bikes when we want to check out our machine's back trail.
